Bridgewater Canal Breach Updated Statement – 6th January 2025
Update Statement – 06th January 2025
Since the stoplogs were installed on 1st January, work continued as a priority to stem the flow of canal water through the stop log positions. An additional earth dam was constructed at School Lane, Dunham Massey on 4th January and we are confident the leakage has now stopped; however, this will be regularly monitored.
One of the emergency measures from the major incident was for all directly affected parties to be contacted by Cheshire Police on 1st January offering support and alternative accommodation. The Bridgewater Canal Company has attempted to contact all affected parties by phone call on 2nd January or in person on 3rd January. Additional water has been delivered to the Ye Old No.3 moorings and temporary toilets and waste disposal are being arranged.
A generator to supply power to boats, moored to the right of the visitor moorings, has been set up. This was kindly supplied by one of the moorers, however Bridgewater Canal will be supplying fuel.
As communicated verbally to some affected parties on site, the intention is to install dams just before the areas of the breach, this will enable the boats at Ye Old No. 3, together with the other affected boats to be refloated.
Today, water control specialist, are undertaking a site visit and will report back on the feasibility and timeframe of installing dams at both locations. Once we have more information, we will provide an updated communication.
If you or another directly affected party require additional assistance, then please email bridgewatercanal@peel.co.uk or call 0161 629 8432
We ask that people stay away from the affected area and respect both canal and towpath closures.
