Bridgewater Canal Breach Updated Statement – 23rd January 2025
TO AFFECTED BOATERS AT YE OLD NO. 3 PLUS OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES EMAIL GROUP
Refilling of the canal including Ye Old No.3
On Monday 20th January a controlled syphoning of water to refill the canal, west of the breach, including the moorings at Ye Old No. 3 commenced.
The water level is rising by approximately 4 to 5 inches per day, and we expect boats will begin to refloat today or over the next few days. Whilst we believe any risk during the controlled refilling and refloating is low, we strongly recommend that boaters vacate and do not stay aboard their craft during this operation. We advise that boat owners regularly visit their craft and are vigilant for water ingress via craft drain holes.
As discussed, and agreed with Cheshire East at the Environment and Infrastructure meeting on Wednesday 22nd January, there will be no controlled siphoning or raising of water levels on Friday 24th January due to Storm Éowyn. Please note that water levels may naturally increase due to rainfall.
Storm Éowyn Weather Alert
From 2:00am to 2:00pm on Friday 24th January, Storm Éowyn is forecast to bring strong winds across the country.
We strongly advise:
– Boat Owners: Check that mooring ropes are in good condition and ensure your craft is securely and safely moored.
– Towpath Users: Please follow Met Office advice for the amber warning.
If you encounter any issues, please contact the Bridgewater Canal out-of-hours emergency number: 0151 236 9781.
Stay safe, and thank you for your cooperation.
Kind regards
Peter Parkinson – Director – Bridgewater Canal
